Halfway: our first pair unbeaten in the South East
The National University Padel League's South East Conference has reached the halfway point of the season. On 6 January the league published the standings at the halfway stage, and on 8 January it followed them with a recap of the first half. Oxford's first season in the league is going well, and one of our pairs has yet to be beaten.
Two fixture days played
The season began at Padel Hub Reading on 25 October. That day our Division 1 pairs won six of their eight matches against Cambridge, LSE, Reading and Oxford Brookes. In Men's Division 2 our third and fourth pairs lost some very close matches and received a walkover from Cambridge. The second fixture day followed on 27 November, when the club fielded four men's pairs and one women's pair.
Men's Division 1 at halfway
In the Men's Division 1 table our first pair are unbeaten, with five wins from five and 61 games won to 19 lost. They are second, level on wins with Reading's first pair and behind them only on games difference. Our second pair have won four of their five matches. Both LSE pairs are close behind the leaders, with four wins each. The league notes that its tables include the walkovers recorded against Cambridge, so some figures may still change.
Cambridge withdraw
The biggest change at halfway is Cambridge's withdrawal. The league has confirmed that Cambridge are no longer taking part, and walkovers have been recorded against them. Cambridge had pairs in all three divisions, so every division is affected. The conference began with five universities, and Oxford, Oxford Brookes, Reading and LSE will contest the second half. The club looks forward to meeting Cambridge on court again.
The second half
Two fixture days remain. Every result still counts towards the division standings. At the end of the regular season the leading pairs from each conference go through to the national Finals Day in April, a knockout that decides the overall titles.
